Our History Timeline

1960s

  • Late 1960’s - Hamilton County Association for Special Citizens and Tipton County Association for Retarded Citizens were created primarily by parents who sought to provide proper programming for their disabled children.

1970s

  • 1972 - Hamilton County Association for Special Citizens established a professional staff and started a work activity center housed on the second floor of the Carmel High School building.
  • Mid-70’s - Hamilton County Commissioners and Council supported transportation services for the Hamilton County Association for Special Citizens.
  • 1975- Tipton County Association for Retarded Citizens established the Tipton Work Enterprise to provide vocational training programs.
  • 1976- Step-by-Step preschool for children with learning disabilities opens as part of the Hamilton County Association for Special Citizens.
  • 1977 - Hamilton County Association for Special Citizens develops homes on Cherry Street in Noblesville, donated by Mrs. Marie Craig, for use as as group homes and administrative offices.
  • 1977 - The Shorewood Corporation donated a 5 acre parcel of land on Hague Road in Noblesville to the Hamilton County Association for Special Citizens. A 5,000 sq. ft. workshop was constructed the same year.
  • April 4, 1979 - The Hamilton County Association for Special Citizens and the Tipton County Association for Retarded Citizens merged to become Janus Developmental Services, Inc.

1980s

  • 1983 - Janus received a grant from the Indiana Rehabilitation Services Board to establish community worksite programs and expand services.
  • 1985 - Janus opened third sheltered workshop in Carmel.

1990s

  • 1990 - City of Noblesville purchased the Cherry Street buildings from Janus.
  • 1991 - Janus moved its Administrative offices into 501 S. 9th Street in Noblesville.
  • 1991 - Janus implemented the First Steps program with funding from the Federal Government.
  • 1992 - Tipton Work Enterprise facility merged with Hamilton County Industries in Noblesville.
  • 1992 - Courthouse Canteen opened in the Hamilton County Government and Judicial Center.
  • 1993 - Janus purchased acreage, warehouse and offices from O’Malia Food Markets to centralize operations on State Road 32.
  • 1994 - Janus Centralized the Carmel sheltered workshop, Hamilton County Development Industries, training and administrative offices by moving into its current facility on St. Rd. 32.
  • 1994 - Janus received its first three-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). The accreditation has been renewed every 3 years since that time with excellent reviews.

2000s

  • 2002 - Janus began operation of Noblesville Public Transit (NPT), providing public transportation in Noblesville.
  • 2006 - Janus received a large grant from the Bureau of Rehabilitative Services to provide transitional services for high school students with disabilities in Westfield and Noblesville.
  • 2007 - Janus expanded NPT to include all of Hamilton County, becoming Hamilton County Express.
  • 2008 - Completed major renovations to the facility.
  • 2008 - Introduced high-tech computerized systems to Hamilton County Express (HCE)
  • 2009 - Janus was named a benefactor of the Virginia Hall Estate. We thank Mrs. Hall for her thoughtfulness and generosity.
  • 2009 - Received and award from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act to use for catital improvements to our Hamilton Ccounty Express (HCE) Service.
  • 2009 - Janus received a call from the White House.
  • 2009 - Janus delivered a near perfect CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) Survey - with one minor recommendation.
  • 2010 - Launched dynamic website.
  • 2010 - On June 3rd ground is broken on the first phase of the Janus Community Garden. The community garden promotes Indiana native flowers and provides individuals served at Janus with a life enriching work skills training opportunity.
  • 2010 - On June 10th the Hamilton County JDS Aktion Club was launched. The Aktion Club is sponsored by the Kiwanis and is a community service group composed of adult citizens living with disabilities.
  • 2010 - On July 1st Hamilton County Express partners with IndyGo to provide transportation services outside of Hamilton County by connecting with IndyGo stops along 82nd Street in Marion County.
  • 2011 - In partnership with 22 local businesses, organizations and Hamilton County Master Gardeners we established the Community Garden
  • 2011 - We contracted with Department of Natural Resources to sell Hidden Talents items
  • 2011 - We launched an advertising campaign using HCE buses
  • 2011 - Established the JDS (Janus Developmental Services) Aktion Club (service club for consumers to participate in)
  • 2011 - Received the Romona Smith bequest
  • 2011 - Host the Federal Government in a transit audit- one minor recommendation
  • 2011 - Established an Advisory Council
  • 2011 - Became the 1st in the state to secure Network Provider Status for First Steps
  • 2011 - Constructed new space for Habilitation Program
  • 2011 - Was the recipient of proceeds from the Carmel High School Concert and selected as recipient of three events from Fishers
  • 2011 - Presented our largest Ask Event to date
