 Greetings and welcome to our website, welcome to Janus Developmental Services, Inc. I am grateful for the opportunity to partner with our wonderful community and invite you to join us on our incredible journey as we remain committed to delivering on our mission to provide individuals with disabilities the opportunity to participate and contribute within the community.
I am often asked about our name. Janus is the Roman god of doorways, gates and avenues, the keeper of the past and future depicted with two faces: one looking to the past ever mindful of lessons learned, the other looking forward to the future, controlling innovation and progress. And somewhere in the middle lies the aggregate of all human experiences and dreams.
Janus Developmental Services is the result of a 1950’s grassroots movement of parents who decided to ignore the experts and not institutionalize their children born with disabilities. These parents boldly asked their neighbors to look with better eyes and we found that when we change the way we see things, the things we see change.
Janus is one of the few agencies in the state of Indiana and the only facility based agency in Hamilton County that offers a comprehensive menu of services that reaches out to all those with disabilities regardless of age or severity of the disability. I believe in serving those with disabilities, their families and each other with excellence and I am most proud of the quality of our programs and services. We recognize that quality is never an accident but the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution and represents a wise choice of many alternatives. Through our CARF accredited programs and services we enable those with disabilities to turn the corner from risk to resiliency, from adversity to opportunity.
So what makes Janus Developmental Services a good, safe investment?
- Longevity: we have been around for 30 years and we are here to stay.
- We are the only Hamilton County facility based organization offering comprehensive services to those with disabilities.

- Board commitment and involvement including 100% leadership giving.
- Tenured staff: nearly 25% have been with Janus at least a decade.
- Sound fiscal management and financial stability.
But we are not without challenge: with Medicaid Waiver programmatic changes, funding cutbacks, unfunded mandates and increasing regulatory oversight we are truly being pushed “to the max”. While it is all about change, pressures and possibilities we never forget that this is not a dash, it is a marathon and I am absolutely convinced that we have what it takes to navigate through these difficult times. No doubt, though, the work ahead requires equal parts of vision and audacity.
Eleanor Roosevelt said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” We believe in our dream, our vision that those with disabilities will be defined by their abilities. We have learned that where there is no vision people parish and we believe that we have a responsibility to act locally but think globally. So I want to talk about a global vision with one word, Janteloven: a Danish word emphasizing that no person is better than another. When this philosophy is widely accepted, then we will truly have cause to celebrate.
I have faith in our board, I have faith in our staff, I have faith in our principles, practices and priorities and I have faith in you, our community. I do believe that hope is the hybrid of desire and expectation and Janus Developmental Services, Inc. brings us face to face with hope offering unlimited opportunities to reshape traditional services and create a template for social change. But perhaps more now than ever, it is not a matter of having hope but a matter that we are the hope!
